It was hard when Nicole told me she wanted to leave Conquer Books. We started this company in 2018 and coaching sci-fi/fantasy writers with my sister was a dream.
And like a work in progress, dreams change.
When Nicole told me she wanted to back away from writerly education and focus on her own projects, I understood.
And I also had to make a decision on my own. It was a moment to check in. Was I being fulfilled by the work of a book coach? Did helping a writer refine their outline or rebrand their series still energize me? Or were there enough writing gurus and editor and book coaches in the world that I wouldn’t be missed if I too stepped away?
I have edited over 5 million words, worked with hundreds of writers to tell their story better. I’ve written 6 books myself, attended writing conferences across the country, and looked at more query letters than I can count.
And I can easily say that book coaching is within my zone of genius. For me, there’s nothing like pushing into the abstract nature of a story and seeing what tweak will help the writer better tell the story they’re trying to do.
I’m in Conquer Books for the long-term.
For now, it’s just me and the support of my assistant, but I’m excited to see how things grow.
I’ve got some new ideas for projects, new ways to help writers.
Right now, we’re—I’m—taking you through how to write and edit a book in a year on our Substack. I’m working one-on-one coaching some writers I’m really excited about. And I continue to speak and lead virtual and in person writing workshops.
I’m asking for your help with two things today:
Please share about Conquer Books with other writers. Forward our newsletters to writers you think would benefit. Restack our posts or write a review on Google. Whatever you choose to do to help build awareness of Conquer Books.
Sign up for a paid Subscription. $5 a month gives you great access to a book coach in her zone of genius and will reshape your writing career.
There’s lots of change in store. I’ll see you soon.
